Moonlight Monarch for Newcastle on Thursday

Moonlight Monarch makes his handicap debut at Newcastle on Thursday as he lines up for the 'Al Dousari Qatar Equine Products UK Novices' Handicap Hurdle'. Purchased back in 2020 from the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale the son of Sea The Moon has been lightly campaigned, having raced just three times, and he'll begin his career in handicaps off a mark of 94.

Moonlight Monarch was fifth of nine when last seen on the racecourse in December at Wetherby. However, the form was let down when Campaign Trail, who was third that day having been sent off as the 2/5 favourite, ran poorly at Taunton last week. The fourth home at Wetherby, Goddess Afrana, finished midfield in a Class 5 race at Warwick last month.

There are plenty of horses with chances in the contest, with Benefit Ben looking a likely favourite after posting an easy win at Sedgefield last week.

Tread Softly Now looks another set to go well. She was a surprise 40/1 winner at Ayr in January, and the form of that race was franked when The Jeweller's Pet, who finished third, came out and won easily back at the same track earlier this week.
