Sheriff Hutton Point-to-Point: 25th January

The rearranged Point-to-Point in aid of the Yorkshire Air Ambulance has now been confirmed for Saturday 25th January, after the track was deemed unraceable last Sunday. The action begins at 11.45am and we have an exciting afternoon of jump racing to raise funds for charity. Directions to the course are here.

"It was frozen solid last week", said Mick Easterby. "It wasn't safe and we couldn't race, but it's warmed up and it's all fine now."

"We had a plan in place in case the weather intervened and it will now go ahead on the 25th. It'll be the first time we've raced on a Saturday."

Sheriff Hutton Steeplechases have been run on our land which lies to the north of the village in mid-January each year.

The first meeting took place in 2008, raising £5,000 for the YAA and selling out the 1,800 print run of racecards. The races have taken place annually ever since, barring a one-year break as a consequence of COVID in 2021, but returned in 2022 and proved to be as popular as ever.

"It's a marvellous day out", said Mick Easterby. "People come from all over. We'll have a marquee and food and stalls and some good racing."

"We have a team of 50 to 60 volunteers who come along and give their time for free. They are wonderful people. It’s a day that makes me very proud."

Christine Drury, Chair of the Sheriff Hutton Point-to-Point committee, said "Rural communities like ours are reliant on services like this and when you see the helicopter flying down and you know there is help coming, it's truly amazing."

"I'd like to thank the Point-to-Point Club committee, and all our supporters and sponsors, for again making the fundraising possible."

There's ample free car parking on grass, admission is £15 per person and entry for under-16s is free. Please note that entry and the bar are cash only.

Mick and the team look forward to welcoming a good crowd to enjoy a great afternoon of racing.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance serves a region of around five million people. The service is an independent charity and needs to raise £19,000 every day to keep its two helicopters in operation. The southern part of the region is served from Nostell Priory near Wakefield whilst the northern section has a helicopter based at RAF Topcliffe, Thirsk. The YAA also operates two Rapid Response Vehicles.

"We've raised well over £200,000 so far and we’d like to get the total to £250,000 so please come and join us", said Mick Easterby. "It's a fantastic charity and a lifeline for so many people. We'd like to get as many people to come along as we possibly can."
